What does POEM do?

Peroral endoscopic myotomy uses an endoscope passed through the mouth to divide selected muscle. Oesophageal POEM is used particularly for achalasia, a disorder in which the passage into the stomach does not relax properly and swallowing is impaired. It is not a tumour-removal procedure. Which tests help establish suitability?

AGA's 2024 advice calls for a thorough assessment including medical and medication history, upper endoscopy, a timed barium oesophagram and high-resolution manometry. What alternatives are there for achalasia?

How are the other names different?

POEM: The oesophageal diagnosis, particularly achalasia, and its subtype.

Z-POEM: Whether symptoms relate to a Zenker diverticulum and which endoscopic or surgical approach fits.

G-POEM: Whether gastroparesis is confirmed and symptoms persist despite appropriate medical care.

G-POEM concerns the stomach outlet, not the swallowing junction. Why is reflux follow-up important?

What risks and recovery issues should I discuss?

Get written instructions about diet, medicines, activity and warning symptoms. Do not stop prescribed medication without clinical advice.
