Labiaplasty in Istanbul: questions to ask before deciding
Unimed Editorial Team · · 3 min read
Understand the difference between labiaplasty and vaginoplasty, possible risks, alternatives and aftercare before arranging an Istanbul consultation.

What does labiaplasty change?
Labiaplasty reduces or reshapes the labia minora, the inner folds around the vaginal opening. Noticeable folds can be normal. It is not the same as narrowing the vaginal canal. The NHS advises against cosmetic labiaplasty under 18 because development continues into early adulthood. NHS: labiaplasty
This guide concerns an adult consultation. It does not define an ideal appearance or suggest that normal anatomy needs correction.

Is discomfort a reason to ask for assessment?
Yes, but not necessarily a reason for an operation. Describe when discomfort occurs, what makes it worse and whether appearance or physical symptoms are your main concern.
ASPS describes tugging and twisting during activities or intercourse among reasons people seek assessment. Ask whether your symptoms actually relate to the labia before choosing a technique. ASPS: labiaplasty
You can request a chaperone and an explanation before an examination. A booking enquiry cannot establish suitability.

Which alternatives should be discussed?
The NHS notes that another treatable condition may explain discomfort; counselling may also be suggested before a cosmetic decision. Surgery does not guarantee improved body confidence. NHS
Ask whether treating the cause of symptoms, postponing a decision or choosing no operation would better match your priorities. These are questions for assessment, not interchangeable treatments for everyone.
Useful questions include: What happens if I do nothing now? What would surgery not address? Do my plans for pregnancy or my medical history change your advice?

How do techniques and risks differ?
ASPS describes trim and wedge techniques. The choice should have an individual explanation, not a promise that one marketing label is best.
Bleeding, infection and healing problems are possible. Excessive tissue removal can cause dryness, scarring and painful intercourse. Ask how the surgeon balances tissue reduction with preserving comfort and function. ASPS
Request a discussion of anaesthetic risks, changes in sensation, dissatisfaction and possible further care. Ask who handles complications and what additional costs could arise. Do not assume that a smaller appearance means a better functional result.

What should recovery planning include?
NHS information describes potentially needing up to two weeks away from work, with full skin healing taking longer. Its activity restrictions are general advice, not personal clearance. NHS
Before treatment, obtain a written plan covering wound care, pain relief, activity, sex, warning symptoms and follow-up. Ask when the treating clinician would consider travel appropriate. A return-flight booking should not determine medical clearance.
Agree how to reach the clinical team after returning home and where to obtain urgent care if needed. Coordination messages are not a substitute for emergency assessment.

Frequently asked questions
Is labiaplasty the same as vaginoplasty?
No. Ask the clinician to distinguish external labial surgery from an operation involving the vaginal canal.
Does asking for information commit me to surgery?
No. You may seek another opinion, take time or decline.
Can I choose my recovery date in advance?
You can plan practical support, but the treating team must advise on healing and activity. A fixed travel package cannot guarantee recovery.
Is this personalised advice?
No. This is general education by the Unimed Editorial Team. It does not replace an examination or an individual treatment plan.
