Before your assessment

“Your scan needs a closer look” can sound alarming. It does not automatically mean cancer, surgery or an urgent flight abroad. Before arranging an EUS assessment in Istanbul, ask what question the procedure is intended to answer.

What is EUS?

An ultrasound probe on a specialised endoscope produces images from inside the digestive tract. For upper EUS, the instrument passes through the mouth. It can examine the gut wall and nearby structures, including the pancreas. EUS uses sound waves, but still involves an endoscopic procedure; it is not simply an ultrasound scan over the skin. This guide concerns upper EUS assessment. Other EUS examinations and therapeutic procedures require their own explanation and consent.

When might a clinician recommend it?

EUS may help clarify a finding already seen on CT or MRI, examine a pancreatic lesion or assess selected digestive cancers and nearby lymph nodes. Whether it adds useful information depends on the clinical question. It does not inspect every organ or solve every “hard-to-reach” tumour problem. Johns Hopkins Medicine

Bring your previous reports to the consultation. A helpful question is: “What can EUS add to the information we already have?”

Does a pancreatic cyst always need sampling?

No. An EUS examination and EUS-guided sampling are different decisions. Sampling may collect fluid, cells or tissue for laboratory analysis. A cyst is not synonymous with cancer.

ESGE guidance links pancreatic-cyst sampling to whether a more precise diagnosis could change management. The clinician weighs the appearance, other investigations and the consequences of the result. Do not assume that every cyst needs a needle, drainage or surgery. ESGE clinical guideline, 2017

Ask what will be tested and how each possible result would affect monitoring or treatment.

What do FNA and FNB mean?

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and fine-needle biopsy (FNB) are sampling techniques. Their selection depends on the target and the material needed.

For solid pancreatic lesions, the 2025 ESGE technical review favours end-cutting FNB needles over certain alternative needles; FNA can still have a role in particular settings. This is not a recommendation to request one technique for every lesion. Your endoscopist and pathology team should explain the plan. ESGE technical review, 2025

Could another test answer the question?

Sometimes other radiological tests provide sufficient information. Ask whether review of existing imaging, further imaging or observation is appropriate, and what would be lost by not doing EUS. They are not automatically equivalent alternatives. Cambridge University Hospitals

An inconclusive sample is also possible. If concern for malignancy remains despite a negative or unclear result, further pathology review, repeat sampling or another management approach may be needed. A negative sample alone is not always the end of the investigation. ESGE clinical guideline, 2017

What are the risks and preparation requirements?

Discuss bleeding, perforation, sedation-related problems and, with certain sampling procedures, pancreatitis or infection. Risk differs between imaging alone, needle sampling and therapeutic EUS. Do not apply one complication estimate to all three. Cambridge University Hospitals

Obtain personalised fasting and medication instructions. Tell the team about allergies and all medicines, especially blood thinners. Do not stop prescribed medication yourself. Arrange an escort after sedation and follow the team's restrictions on driving, work and alcohol. Cambridge University Hospitals

What happens after the examination?

Initial findings and final laboratory results may arrive at different times. Before leaving, ask who will explain the results, when to contact them if nothing arrives, and whether further review is needed.

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, chest pain or very dark stools after EUS need prompt medical assessment. Do not wait for a travel coordinator in an emergency. Johns Hopkins Medicine

How do I arrange an assessment in Istanbul, Turkey?

Unimed's supplied Prof. Dr. Barış Yılmaz profile lists EUS among his applications. This editorial guide does not claim his personal review or current appointment availability.

Ask which imaging files, reports and previous pathology the clinician needs, and how to transfer them confidentially. Confirm the hospital, sedation plan, whether sampling is included, the written estimate and follow-up after returning home. Agree travel timing with the treating team; there is no universal stay or price in this guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is EUS itself cancer treatment?

Diagnostic EUS and sampling investigate a concern. Therapeutic EUS is a separate category; an assessment does not promise treatment or cure.

Will I receive the biopsy result immediately?

Not usually. Confirm the laboratory timeline and a named contact for discussing the result.

Does an inconclusive biopsy mean nothing is wrong?

No. The clinician must interpret it alongside imaging and the reason for the investigation.

Have reports for this procedure?

Send them for a confidential specialist review. A coordinator confirms what is missing and when the doctor's view will be ready.
