What is endoscopic submucosal dissection?

Endoscopic submucosal dissection, or ESD, removes selected abnormal tissue from the digestive tract using an endoscope. It can be an option for some superficial precancerous lesions and early cancers. It is not a treatment for every tumor, and a difficult location alone does not make a lesion suitable for ESD.

Who may be considered for ESD?

An experienced endoscopist assesses the lesion's location, surface appearance and suspected depth. European guidance supports ESD for selected superficial gastrointestinal lesions; the decision varies by organ and lesion characteristics. EMR, surgery or another treatment may be more appropriate.

The pathology of the removed tissue matters. Complete removal, depth of invasion and other microscopic findings determine whether additional treatment or surveillance is needed. Removing a lesion does not automatically mean that cancer treatment is complete.
