ERCP
ERCP in Istanbul: when is it needed, and what happens afterwards?
Unimed Editorial Team · · 3 min read
Understand why ERCP may be recommended, alternatives, possible risks, stent follow-up and practical assessment planning in Istanbul.

Before your assessment
A referral for ERCP can raise an immediate question: “Do I need another test, or am I about to have treatment?” Clarifying that distinction is a useful first step before arranging care in Istanbul.
What does ERCP actually do?
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography combines an endoscope passed through the mouth with X-ray imaging of the bile and pancreatic ducts. These are drainage channels, not the entire liver or pancreas. A specialist may use ERCP to address an obstruction or leak. NIDDK
Depending on the findings, treatment may include removing a duct stone, widening a narrowing or inserting a drainage tube called a stent. Tissue sampling may also be possible. ERCP does not mean that a tumour will be removed or that cancer treatment is complete. ASGE
Who might need it—and who needs a different assessment?
A suspected blockage is a reason for specialist assessment, not an automatic ERCP booking. Symptoms, blood tests, previous imaging, medical history and the treatment goal all influence the decision.
For diagnosis alone, MRCP or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) may provide information with less risk than ERCP. MRCP uses MRI; EUS still involves an endoscope and is not a non-invasive scan. A pancreatic cyst or a difficult tumour location, by itself, does not establish an ERCP indication. NIDDK
Ask: “What problem do you expect to treat during ERCP, and what would change if I had another investigation first?”

Are all blockages treated the same way?
No. A narrowing caused by a benign condition differs from malignant obstruction. Location, anatomy, diagnosis and the wider treatment plan affect drainage and stent choice.
The September 2026 ESGE biliary-stricture guideline describes different approaches for different clinical situations. It also addresses alternatives when ERCP fails or is not feasible, including specialist EUS-guided drainage and, where appropriate, drainage through the skin. These are not interchangeable packages; availability and suitability require clinical assessment. ESGE 2026 guideline

What risks should I discuss?
Important complications include pancreatitis, infection, bleeding, perforation and reactions to sedation or anaesthesia. Further hospital treatment may be necessary. Personal risk depends on the planned intervention and your health. NIDDK
Ask how the team reduces pancreatitis risk. ESGE guidance includes preventive medication when appropriate and pancreatic stents for selected high-risk situations. This is a clinician-led decision, not advice to take medication yourself. ESGE adverse-event guideline
How do I prepare and recover?
Give the team a complete medication and allergy list, including blood thinners and diabetes medicines. Mention possible pregnancy. Obtain individual fasting and medication instructions; do not stop prescribed medicines on your own. NIDDK
Arrange an escort after sedation. Some people need an overnight hospital stay. Before discharge, request written instructions about eating, activity, driving, medicines and whom to contact. Sedation can affect memory, so having your escort hear the explanation may help. Cambridge University Hospitals
Fever, worsening abdominal or chest pain, black stools, bleeding or difficulty swallowing after ERCP need urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for a travel coordinator to reply. ASGE
If a stent is inserted, what should I leave with?
Request its type, purpose and a documented review plan. Plastic stents can become blocked; some metal stents are removable and others are intended to remain. Ask whether yours needs removal or replacement, when, and who will arrange it. If samples were taken, confirm how results will be discussed. ASGE

How can I coordinate an assessment in Istanbul?
Unimed's supplied Prof. Dr. Barış Yılmaz profile lists ERCP among his applications. This article does not imply personal review by the doctor or confirmed availability.
Ask the coordination team which reports are needed and how to share them confidentially. Before travel, clarify hospital arrangements, the written estimate, follow-up at home and medical clearance for the return journey. There is no universal stay or price in this guide.
Contact Unimed on WhatsApp: +90 545 234 63 74 for coordination, not emergency care.
Frequently asked questions
Is ERCP the same as EUS?
No. They have different roles; your clinician should explain which question or treatment each addresses.
Does a stent cure cancer?
A drainage stent addresses a duct problem. Do not equate drainage with completion of cancer treatment.
Can I book my flight home before assessment?
Ask the treating team first. Recovery, further intervention and follow-up may change the plan.

Have reports for this procedure?
Send them for a confidential specialist review. A coordinator confirms what is missing and when the doctor's view will be ready.
