The short version

• Ask what the test is intended to clarify.

• Discuss safety before arranging travel.

• Agree who will explain the findings and organise the next step.

What does the capsule do?

You swallow a small camera that photographs the small intestine as it moves through the digestive tract. Images are recorded for later review. This helps examine areas beyond the usual reach of standard upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. ASGE patient information

When might it be appropriate?

ESGE recommends it for suspected small-bowel bleeding and iron-deficiency anaemia when small-bowel investigation is indicated. Selected Crohn's disease assessments are another use. In established Crohn's disease, ESGE recommends a patency capsule first to reduce retention risk. This is a safety assessment, not a camera test that everyone automatically needs. ESGE guideline

What about alternatives and treatment?

The next step may involve cross-sectional imaging or device-assisted enteroscopy, depending on the question. Enteroscopy can confirm and potentially treat abnormalities found by the capsule; swallowing a camera is not itself treatment. ESGE guideline

Ask: “Do we need pictures, tissue samples, treatment, or more than one of these?”

What should the team know beforehand?

Report swallowing difficulty, previous bowel obstruction or abdominal surgery, implanted medical devices and all medicines. Follow the centre's written preparation instructions rather than a generic online timetable. Do not change prescribed medication without advice. ASGE patient information

Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant before proceeding. Norfolk and Norwich patient information

What risks deserve a conversation?

The capsule can become retained, and removal may require endoscopy or surgery. Swallowing problems also need attention because aspiration into the airway is possible. Ask about your individual risk and the plan if the capsule does not pass. Norfolk and Norwich patient information

An incomplete recording or inadequate bowel views may mean another examination is needed. Do not have MRI until the capsule has passed out of your body. UCLH patient information

What happens afterwards?

Arrange equipment return and a results appointment. Reporting is not necessarily immediate. Contact the clinical team for persistent abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting; severe symptoms need urgent assessment, not a routine WhatsApp reply. UCLH patient information

How should I plan an Istanbul assessment?

Before paying for travel, ask the coordinating team:

• Which existing reports should the specialist review, and how can I send them securely?

• Which centre would perform the test, and is the proposed appointment confirmed?

• Who will explain the report and coordinate any further investigation?

• What happens if I need additional care after returning home?

Prof. Dr. Barış Yılmaz's profile lists capsule endoscopy among his focus areas. This is not a claim that he reviewed this article or that an appointment or procedure is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Does swallowing the capsule guarantee a diagnosis?

No. Ask the clinician how a normal, abnormal or incomplete result would change your plan.

Should I book a flight before the assessment?

Ask the treating team to confirm preparation, equipment-return arrangements and follow-up before fixing your itinerary.

Can I ask questions without committing to a procedure?

Ask for a consultation first. Request an explanation of the reason for the test, alternatives and unresolved questions before making a decision.

Have reports for this procedure?

Send them for a confidential specialist review. A coordinator confirms what is missing and when the doctor's view will be ready.
